Another identity formed in the West is the image of America as the powerful nation and self-reliant. The pioneers of the West were tough to live in the West. They had to face harsh conditions of the nature (in contrast with the romanticized West in the early paintings of the West) with shortage of foods, the failed harvest, unpredictable weather conditions, and also some diseases such as diarrhea and malaria. The pioneers struggled hard for living and they were self-reliant. They put their faith on their own power to conquer the land. They were also hard-working.
